Wilderness Therapy Alternatives
Therapeutic wilderness programs offer an alternative approach to traditional, office-based “talk therapy.” Although access to the outdoors is receding rapidly in today’s world, clinical research has repeatedly demonstrated the therapeutic benefits of nature, wilderness settings and adventure-based activities on children, teens and young adults suffering from depression, mood disorders, self-esteem issues, substance abuse issues or the effects of autism or ADHD.
AFHC’s therapeutic wilderness program, Blackwater Outdoor Experiences (BOE), is one of the pioneer therapeutic wilderness programs in the United States and has been treating children, teens and young adults since 1980.
BOE offers 22-day rehabilitative wilderness expeditions, summer camp expeditions and weekly outdoor social skills programs that combine wilderness living and adventure-based activities with individual, group, and family therapy to create a positive environment for personal growth and development.
